Flush sash windows in white uPVCIf you’ve ever been shopping around for new windows, doors or conservatories, you would have come across the term “U-Value”. These values are sprawled across product pages and shown off proudly to whoever comes across them.

But what on earth is a U-Value? Which is better – a high or low U-Value? It can be a little confusing. The experts at Halstead Glass have put together a guide to help you.

What is U-Value?

U-Value is a measure of how easily heat passes through a material, essentially testing how effective it is at retaining heat. These values are measured in Watts per square metre per Kelvin (W/m²K). In basic terms, the lower the U-Value, the better the window or door can retain the warmth in your home.

Thermal efficiency in windows is also measured using Window Energy Ratings (WER). The rating system is based on a scale of A++ (the most energy efficient) to E (the least energy efficient). Having an industry-wide standard allows customers to compare windows from multiple companies to ensure they are getting the best possible product.

Energy efficient double glazing

Double glazed windows in uPVCThe Building Regulations for building work carried out in England were updated in 2010. Measures were made to ensure that homes around the country became more energy efficient. Not only did this change save consumers money, but using less energy is better for the environment. The Regulations state that windows should have a minimum U-Value of 1.6 or have a WER of Band C or better.

Single glazed windows achieve a U-Value of between 4.8 and 5.8 on average. The intelligent design of our double glazed windows allows them to achieve a U-Value of 1.2 and a WER of A+ with ease. High-quality windows prevent draughts and cold spots in the home. This reduces the need for your heating to be on in the colder months, saving you money on your energy bills and creating a more comfortable environment throughout your home.
