Do you need planning permission for a roof lantern?

The planning permission rules for roof lanterns are as follows:

  • A roof lantern cannot extend more than 150mm above the sloping pane of the existing roof
  • A roof lantern must not be taller than the highest part of the existing roof
  • Any roof lanterns positioned in a side elevation must utilise privacy glass
  • There must be no roof openings unless the height is a minimum of 1.7m above the floor
